Barbara's Indian Adventure

This was a life affirming experience, a trip of a lifetime and one that I certainly never thought I’d ever be able to do, especially at the age of 76. I have Brunel Franklin to thank for affording me this opportunity as without the PPI refund they managed to secure from Barclays it would never have happened.

Here is a personal story written by one of our customers, Barbara, who used the money she claimed back from Barclays, to go on a once in a lifetime adventure to help those less fortunate than herself.

"Like most of us I had heard lots about PPI but had never bothered to claim until one day I came across some paperwork from Barclays Bank regarding a loan I had taken out some years back. I thought I’d investigate further so I wrote to Barclays. Despite writing several letters I never heard back from them or even received an acknowledgment so when I saw a Brunel Franklin advert I thought I’d give them a go.

Within 6 months there was over £2000 in my bank account! At first I thought it was a debit and that someone had hacked my account but I soon realised that it was my PPI refund! Absolutely superb and so quick after waiting nearly 3 years for Barclays to respond.

All the letters and correspondence I received from Brunel Franklin were easy to understand, the process was straightforward and the staff were so polite and provided me with regular updates. What a huge surprise when I got my refund! I didn’t think I would get a penny but there I was, aged 76 with over £1300 (after I had paid the fees) in my pocket. I considered this a huge bonus so I applied to the Kamla Foundation to volunteer to do some charity work in India.

Within a month of receiving the money my flight was booked and I was in the state of Tamil Nadu. I was there for the whole month of April 2017….and what a month!!

I witnessed the most incredible sights, wonderful colours and such welcoming, friendly people. I was so glad I had decided not to wait – I just went for it. I travelled alone taking a huge cabin bag full of crafts, books, crayons and art supplies – you name it, I had it! My plan was to do craft activities with old people and orphans which I did, but the people who really resonated with me were the young girls who had been rescued from traffickers. They were mostly teenagers, all of whom had babies of their own. These beautiful young girls were the lucky ones as they were now in a safe place, but it really made me wonder how many more are out there struggling with their lives.

I visited an old people’s home where they lay on low wooden slatted benches. Five or six in a room, some of them just waiting to die. I left there in tears, completely overcome with emotion. Before I came back home I gave them all my clothes as they were so much more needy than me. I worked with orphans and destitute children who never stopped smiling and who loved using the art supplies I had brought with. Something as simple as a piece of paper and a felt tip brought them so much joy. It was truly humbling.

The people of Tamil Nadu and the sights I saw will remain with me for ever. I watched temple festivals with men jumping over hot coals, spikes through their tongues and one man with a 2 metre steel bar impaled through one cheek and out of the other to give himself to his God.

This was a life affirming experience, a trip of a lifetime and one that I certainly never thought I’d ever be able to do, especially at the age of 76. I have Brunel Franklin to thank for affording me this opportunity as without the PPI refund they managed to secure from Barclays it would never have happened.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart."
